Defined by Design
Mixed Media on Canvas
By Lauren Luna
Defined by Design explores the intersection of fashion, identity, and structure through layered mixed media collage. Built upon authentic vintage sewing pattern covers from 1966 and 1973, the piece transforms historical materials once used to shape garments into a contemporary portrait of feminine presence and strength.
Soft washes of lavender, ivory, and slate blue contrast against a striking silhouette adorned with luminous gold leaf details, creating a balance between delicacy and power. Fragments of vintage typography, measurements, and pattern markings remain visible beneath the surface, allowing the history of the materials to become part of the narrative itself.
Both elegant and architectural, Defined by Design reflects the idea that women are often shaped by inherited expectations—yet ultimately define themselves.
